"Who is she that comes forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array?" - Song of Songs 6:10
12:4 IN HIGH ENTERPRISE FOR GOD (pg. 78 – pg. 80) Good afternoon, dear brothers and sisters. First I’d like to wish everybody to stay healthy and keep vigilant of our spirituality in this difficult time.
Now let’s quickly review what we have been through for chapter 12. This chapter is talking about “THE EXTERNAL AIMS OF THE LEGION”. At the very beginning, we talked about “THE ACTUAL WORK IN HANDS”, which is to make every one of us, the members of the Legion of Mary holy. Then we pursue to become THE LEAVEN IN THE COMMUNITY so that the community can be transformed from within by Christ’s redeeming power, and to “WELD ALL TOGETHER” in the high enterprise for God, to bring GOD to each soul. Today we are getting into the last section of chapter 12, which is “IN HIGH ENTERPRISE FOR GOD.”
After reading through the section, I asked myself, what is this section trying to tell me? And what is this section trying to teach me?
When we talk about the high enterprise for God, does it mean to run a big company or a large business for God? I don’t think so, rather, I would say it means to exercise the Legion tasks, typically one that is difficult or requires effort to achieve its success for God.
Another question now pops up, what kind of success means a true success? After some pondering, for the Legion of Mary, as stated in the handbook, I think the answer is, success is to bring God and religion to every soul successfully.
Yet, we have to admit that we are a modest little flock, how can we bring God and religion to each soul? Let us look around here, and recall what St. Paul said in 1st Corinthians, he said: “Consider your own calling, brothers (I would add sisters). Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, and not many were of noble birth.” This can be said about us here today. But amazingly, that very contrast emboldens us. The Legion is composed of souls who are united to the Virgin most Powerful.
I like the word “composed”. In the handbook, it also says about a little band gathered around a statue of Our Lady and said to her: “Lead us”. I envision each one of us as a music note composed to as a song called “lead us” to be sung loudly. I imagine, if we are the same note, then the song would be boring. However, because each one of us is different, once sung or played, the different notes became a beautiful harmonized melody asking Our Lady to lead us. Nevertheless, if we do not pay attention to other notes or prefer a different song, it can only become loud noise and we will never achieve that “song” or in other words, the high enterprise for God.
Therefore, if we harmonize or work with each other, hand in hand with Our Lady, she can lead us to see her Beloved Son in each of the sick and sorrowful and broken. By then, we, the Legion can do those simple acts of love of God in man, and of the love of men for the sake of God; and in every place that love shows its power to stir and win hearts.
This is how we can be in high enterprise for God, because Mary is the heart of the Legion, and that heart is faith and love unutterable. We, each of the unique notes of God and Our Lady can sing along in her heart to fill the world with love. Amen.
